Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that is chronic and can be characterized by shifts in mood – sometimes severe – along with a shift or unusual pattern in energy and activity levels.
An individual with bipolar disorder can alternate between cycles of highs and lows, with the highs known as mania and the lows known as depression. These highs and lows are often severe.
However, with proper treatment that includes therapy, living a full and healthy life with bipolar is possible.

Symptoms of bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder can affect both males and females. The average age of onset is 25 years old; however, it can occur from early childhood well into the 40s and 50s.
It is more common in people who have a family history of bipolar and symptoms may include:
- Mood swings
- Energy level changes during manic and depressive phases
- Disturbances in sleep, either insomnia or excessive sleeping
- Irritability
- Trouble focusing and concentrating on tasks
- Changes in appetite, including weight loss or gain
- Feelings of guild, hopelessness or worthlessness
- Impulsive behavior
There are several types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar I, which is defined as manic episodes that are severe and last at least a week; Bipolar II, which involves patterns of hypomanic and depressive episodes; and cyclothymic disorder, involving more mild fluctuations in mood but chronically.
Treating bipolar disorder with therapy
If left untreated, symptoms may worsen. And while there is no cure for bipolar disorder, there are effective treatments, including therapy at Ann Arbor Therapy & Testing.
Our approach is holistic and customized and work to stabilize mood and reduce mood swing frequency and intensity. We also work with patients to improve their coping skills through stress management and healthy emotional responses while maintaining healthy relationships.
Treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment and evaluation. Then, a customized treatment plan is created and includes regular therapy sessions with our licensed therapists. We can also include family members in the patient’s treatment plan and if medication is necessary, we work with medical professionals to find the corrected one.
